OXNARD : Apparent Heart Attack Kills Beaten Guard

A security guard at an Oxnard subdivision died early Sunday when he apparently suffered a heart attack during a severe beating, a coroner’s office official said.

Hillario Urriza Corpuz, 44, of Norwalk died about 1:20 a.m. Sunday in the 1400 block of Panal Court in Oxnard’s La Colonia neighborhood, police said.

Officers responding to the assault at the subdivision found an unidentified resident administering cardiopulmonary resuscitation to Corpuz, who had fought off an intruder, police said. Corpuz never regained consciousness.

An autopsy performed Sunday morning indicated that blunt blows to Corpuz’s face caused major injuries, but were not fatal, said Craig Stevens, senior deputy coroner.

“We believe he may have had a heart attack during the struggle,” said Craig Stevens, senior deputy coroner. “There were no other fatal injuries. The autopsy showed he had very severe coronary artery disease.”

Corpuz was a security guard for Construction Protective Services, a Newport Beach-based security firm, Stevens said. Police said Corpuz was patrolling a partly completed subdivision.

The victim is survived by a cousin in California, and the rest of his family is in the Philippines.

Police are asking anyone with information about the attack to contact Oxnard Police Detective Ron Whitney at 385-7760.
