NATIONAL LEAGUE ROUNDUP : Giants Rally, Stay Perfect Over Astros, 8-5

Home runs by Will Clark and Dave Martinez helped rally the San Francisco Giants to their ninth victory in 10 games, 8-5 over the Astros at Houston on Sunday.

After Robby Thompson’s two-out single with the Giants trailing 5-4 in the seventh inning, Clark hit his fourth home run of the season against reliever Brian Williams (1-2).

Martinez brought the Giants back from a 4-1 deficit in the sixth with a three-run homer against Pete Harnisch.

Barry Bonds hit his 20th homer in a two-run eighth as the Giants won their fifth consecutive game and improved to 6-0 against the Astros.

“This was the sweetest three games of my career,” Giant Manager Dusty Baker said of the sweep.

Reliever Jeff Brantley (3-5) got two outs in the bottom of the sixth to earn the victory. Rod Beck worked the ninth for his 21st save.

St. Louis 7, Chicago 4--Tom Pagnozzi’s two-run homer capped a four-run second inning, and Geronimo Pena had three hits and three runs batted in to lead the Cardinals at Chicago.

Bob Tewksbury (7-6) earned his third consecutive victory, giving up 10 hits in seven-plus innings while striking out four and walking none. Lee Smith got the final out to take the major league lead with his 23rd save.

Atlanta 5, Montreal 1--Tom Glavine, troubled by the Expos for several years, beat them for the second time this season at Montreal.

Glavine (9-3), who entered this season with a 3-11 record against Montreal, struck out four and walked none.

Pittsburgh 3, New York 2--Pinch-hitter Don Slaught singled in the winning run in the ninth inning against John Franco to lift the Pirates at Pittsburgh and give them a sweep of their four-game series with New York.

The Mets lost for the sixth time in a row. They wasted another strong effort from Bret Saberhagen and suffered their 13th blown save in 18 opportunities.

Al Martin and Orlando Merced both singled to open the ninth and knock out Saberhagen (3-6).

After a sacrifice and two walks, Slaught lined a single to center.

Colorado 3, San Diego 1--Vinny Castilla hit a tie-breaking seventh-inning homer as the Rockies beat the Padres and set another attendance record at Denver.

With a crowd of 63,661, the Rockies reached 2,050,001 on their 36th home date, a record rate for passing 2 million.

Castilla hit his third homer on the first pitch of the inning from reliever Roger Mason (0-5).

Philadelphia 4, Florida 3--John Kruk hit a three-run homer in the seventh inning to lift the Phillies and Tommy Greene over the Marlins at Philadelphia, improving the team’s record on Sundays to 11-0.

The victory was the third in a row and ninth in 12 games for Philadelphia, and improved Greene’s record to 9-1.

Greene gave up six hits in seven innings, striking out seven and walking two.
