Weekend Box Office : ‘Proposal’ Joins the $100-Million Club

Share

As “Jurassic Park” continues to devour the competition and box-office records, two more major summer contenders arrive Friday: “Dennis the Menace,” based on the comic and TV character, and “Sleepless in Seattle” with Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan. To date, “Jurassic Park” has easily knocked off the competition, grossing $120.2 million--a record--in only 10 days of release. So huge is the “Jurassic” tidal wave, that even a normally big weekend number such as the $15.3 million for “Last Action Hero” is dwarfed. The gross for “Action Hero” was widely regarded by the film industry as a disappointment, considering its star Arnold Schwarzenegger, the promotional effort and big budget. The total fell short of Columbia’s own opening estimate of $20 million.

* “Indecent Proposal,” with Robert Redford, Demi Moore and Woody Harrelson, passed $100 million in its 11th weekend.
