BURBANK : 2 Firms Recommended for School Renovations

Share

A Burbank Unified School District advisory committee has recommended two architectural firms to design a $90-million renovation of the city’s two public high schools.

The architects, RTA Blurock Architects of Costa Mesa and Ruhnau Ruhnau Todd Associates of Riverside, had been chosen by a special committee made up of community leaders and district officials. The committee, appointed in March, chose from among 31 firms.

The recommendation that the two architectural firms be hired is to be made to the Board of Education at its meeting Thursday night.

The board will decide whether to hire both firms and how to divide the work, District Supt. Arthur Pierce said.

One possibility would be for each firm to be assigned either Burbank High or John Burroughs High, and one be assigned to plan a modernization throughout the school district, Pierce said.

Both high schools are more than 60 years old. The renovation of John Burroughs High School would cost an estimated $41 million, including the replacement of windows, wiring and plumbing. District officials have said that nearly all of Burbank High School, except for the auditorium, would have to be replaced, at a cost of about $51 million.

District officials do not expect to make a decision on a bond vote until next year.
