BASEBALL DAILY REPORT : DODGERS : Lasorda Is Left in a Fighting Mood After Suspensions; Reed on Disabled List

Share

National League President Bill White handed down suspensions Monday for brawls involving the Dodgers, and his rulings had Manager Tom Lasorda seething.

For the incidents between the Dodgers and the Colorado Rockies June 15, White suspended pitcher Ramon Martinez for five games for intentionally hitting Charlie Hayes with a pitch; Hayes for three games for charging Martinez and reliever Keith Shepherd of the Rockies for seven days for intentionally hitting Cory Snyder with a pitch after a warning had been issued, inciting a second bench-clearing brawl.

But White did not suspend Andres Galarraga, whose hard slide and kick at Jody Reed precipitated Martinez throwing at Hayes. Reed suffered a hyper-extended left elbow, has been sidelined four games and was put on the 15-disabled list, retroactive to last Wednesday.

“Where’s Galarraga in this whole picture?” Lasorda asked. “He’s the guy that started the whole thing. How could they say he didn’t slide and deliberately kick him? My guy is out . . . and there is no telling when he will play.”

White also suspended Rick Trlicek for three games for intentionally hitting Gary Sheffield of the Padres in a game June 10 at San Diego, inciting a brawl. The Dodgers have appealed the suspensions and a hearing will be held in New York next month.

White also suspended Jose Bautista of the Chicago Cubs for three games for intentionally hitting Mark Carreon of the San Francisco Giants after a warning had been issued in a game June 11.

All the suspensions carried a fine of an undisclosed amount. All the players except Shepherd appealed their suspensions and are eligible to play pending a hearing.

White also upheld the suspension of New York Met Howard Johnson, whose three-day suspension will be served after Johnson is reinstated from the disabled list.

The Dodgers called up utility player Henry Rodriguez from triple-A Albuquerque to replace Reed. . . . For the Record: In a note Monday, it was incorrectly stated that Kevin Gross suffered a loss in a game at San Diego this month. He was not involved in the decision.
