Eagle Rock : Community Cleanup Effort
More than 100 neighborhood volunteers showed up last weekend to push brooms, pick up trash and paint over graffiti in Eagle Rock and Highland Park.
The Saturday cleanup was part of the yearlong effort initiated by City Councilman Richard Alatorre in his district. The city’s “Operation Clean Sweep” provided the shovels, brooms, trash bags, gloves, dustpans and paint, and city department staff provided some of the muscle.
And the ordinary folk, from high school students to merchants associations, provided help too.
“There’s a spirit of cooperation and you learn that a person can make a difference. You also feel that the council is responsive in mobilizing a community to make the difference,” said Carlos Chavez, president of CHEER, Citizens Helping to Enhance Eagle Rock.
“The public sector and the community working together--this is the only way to go to help and beautify our community. I’m grateful that (the citizens) are helping,” said Alatorre, who called graffiti “the worst blight ecologically and visually. It’s depressing and an eyesore throughout the city and county of L.A.”
The cleanup continues in Highland Park at 8 a.m. Saturday. Volunteers should meet at Sycamore Grove Park on Figueroa Street.
