VENTURA : Rocks, Jewels Are Big Draw at Gem Show

The chance to view and purchase eons-old rocks, bones and teeth drew nearly 10,000 collectors and spectators to the California State Gem Show at the Ventura County Fairgrounds over the weekend.

More than 350 exhibitors and dealers from around the state gathered at the 54th annual event, displaying their goods for gem-lovers and jewelry-makers looking for the perfect additions to their collections.

“There is quite a range of rocks here,” said Bruno Benson, past president of the Ventura Gem and Mineral Society. “This show really gives people a chance to get their hands on some nice gems.”

Nearby, a guard kept close watch on a basketball-sized golden topaz encased in glass, while 4-year-old collector Blair Bennett of Agoura Hills reached for a yellow stone that looked like a cube of Jell-O.

A dealer quickly rescued the rock, explaining that it was an uncut garnet worth $180.

Blair wandered to another booth in search of more economical additions to his collection.

“I like amethyst the best,” he said.

Older sister Nina, 9, rolled her eyes. “You should see his room,” she said. “He has rocks everywhere, even in his sock drawer.”

Nina had her heart set on a lump of rose quartz. “Isn’t it wonderful?” she said, sighing as she caressed the light pink, sparkly rock.

The two young collectors were accompanied to the show by their mother, Karen Bennett, who said she was pleased with her children’s hobby.

“I’d rather have them spend a few dollars on this than on some junky toy that they end up throwing away,” she said.
