Toland Landfill Fees to Increase
Ventura County residents who want to dump their garbage at the Toland Road Landfill in Santa Paula soon will have to pay a minimum charge of $20, county waste management officials said Monday.
Faced with budget cuts and increased costs, the Ventura Regional Sanitation District has agreed to increase the fees by at least $3 per load of trash, starting Thursday. Officials also decided to increase dumping fees from $40.50 a ton to $45 a ton.
In addition to the rate increase, the Toland dump will no longer be open the first Saturday of each month.
In another cost-cutting measure, the Santa Clara Buyback Center at the Bailard Landfill in Oxnard will close, also starting Thursday.
Residents who want to recycle cans, bottles and papers will have to go take the items to other sites, county waste officials said.
“There are plenty of other places now where people can recycle,” said Allison Maires, a spokeswoman for the Ventura Regional Sanitation District, which runs the landfill.
Payouts for recyclables at the Buyback Center cost the district $200,000 a year, Maires said. For alternative recycling sites, call 654-3935.
