COMPTON : Interim Chief Named for School District

Share

State education officials on Friday named a retired Rowland Heights superintendent as interim administrator of the financially troubled Compton Unified School District.

Stan Oswalt, 69, of Huntington Beach will head the district until a trustee is appointed at the end of the month, a state Department of Education spokesman said.

The appointment came a day after Gov. Pete Wilson authorized a $10.5-million emergency loan to bail out the 29,000-student district. The trustee will overhaul the finances and the education programs of the district, where the test scores have traditionally been among the lowest in the state.

Oswalt said he is not a candidate for the job of trustee, but he will begin the work of developing a recovery plan for the district until a replacement arrives.

Oswalt served as superintendent of the Rowland Unified School District for 24 years before retiring in 1987. He worked as a state-appointed trustee for the West Covina Unified School District from 1987 to 1992.
