Blankenship Foils Phipps at Saugus
Dave Blankenship of Reseda took advantage of the pole position and held off hard-charging Dave Phipps of Simi Valley to win the NASCAR Grand American Modified 40-lap main event at Saugus Speedway on Saturday night before an overflow holiday crowd of 6,543.
Blankenship led the entire way despite heavy pressure from season points leader Phipps, who was within a few feet of Blankenship at the checkered flag.
It was the second main-event victory of the season for Blankenship, who is third in the points standings, and it tied him with Phipps at 45 career wins in all divisions at Saugus.
John Watkinson of Canyon Country maintained his second-place points standing with a third-place finish, and Gary Nazaroff of Covina was fourth.
Jeff Drummen of Northridge made the most of his first appearance of the season in the Street Stock division, coming from ninth place to win the 25-lap main event.
Gerrit Cromsigt took the checkered flag in the 15-lap Street Stock Figure-eight main event, his eighth victory of the season in that division.
