Animal activists sought homes Sunday for nearly 100 sick and malnourished dogs, cats and birds seized in a raid by city and state officials.

“It’s a tough situation because the cats and dogs need medical care,” said Barbara Fabricant, a member of the state Humane Task Force. “We’re really in trouble about them.”

The ailing animals were confiscated Saturday from a home in Glassell Park in northeast Los Angeles. One of the home’s residents was arrested on animal cruelty charges.

The animals were deprived of food and water and kept in wretched conditions--some in boxes under the kitchen sink and in cabinets, Fabricant said.

The animals were taken to shelters but were not expected to stay there long, Fabricant said. She said she hoped people would step in and give the animals homes.

“I got about 2,000 calls, all for the parrots,” Fabricant said. “The birds are probably worth about $2,000, that’s why I’m inundated.”

The parrots will probably be auctioned to pay for some of the veterinary and boarding expenses, Fabricant said. The auction, however, will not be held for another year because the birds will be used as evidence at the trial of the woman.

The Van Nuys-based Pet Assistance Foundation will help Humane Task Force officers in finding homes for the dogs and cats, a spokeswoman said.

Those who want to adopt a cat or dog, veterinarians who can donate services and kennels that can offer free services can call the Pet Assistance Foundation at (818) 700-2401.
