A 45-year-old Los Angeles County man died after suffering a heart attack while maneuvering his 26-foot sailboat through Channel Islands Harbor, officials said Sunday.
John Oteri of Canyon Country suffered the attack shortly after 7 p.m. Saturday aboard his unnamed vessel, said U.S. Coast Guard Petty Officer 1st Class Marc Engelbrecht.
Oteri, who was alone on the boat, was trying to get the vessel away from the harbor’s south jetty, authorities said. An unidentified man came to Oteri’s assistance and was helping him when Oteri collapsed on the deck, Engelbrecht said.
The man attempted cardiopulmonary resuscitation and alerted officials, Engelbrecht said. But Oteri was pronounced dead about 8:15 p.m. in the emergency room at St. John’s Regional Medical Center, Senior Deputy Coroner Dale Zentzis said.
Zentzis said Oteri is survived by his father, sister and brother, all of the San Fernando Valley, and a daughter.
