A 44-year-old man visiting from Seattle was killed early Sunday when the car he was riding in crashed into the guardrail of a freeway off-ramp.

Thuc Van Mai suffered chest injuries in the 5:55 a.m. crash, which occurred on the Bolsa Chica Road off-ramp of the southbound San Diego Freeway.

He was pronounced dead at Long Beach Memorial Hospital, California Highway Patrol Sgt. Jim Jackson said.

“It appears that the driver didn’t negotiate the curve on the ramp and went straight through and ran into a guardrail,” Jackson said. “It appears that the driver was going too fast.”

The driver, Tri Huu Ho, 42, of Westminster was taken to the same hospital with moderate chest injuries.

Jackson said both men were wearing seat belts.
