SAN FERNANDO : Expansion Urged on Liquor Store Law
After helping fashion an ordinance to curb the proliferation of liquor outlets in San Fernando, members of the San Fernando Residents Council favor similar rules for the rest of the northeast San Fernando Valley.
And they hope to persuade newly elected Councilman Richard Alarcon and Mayor Richard Riordan that the idea is a good one.
“It really does us no good to have a strict ordinance in San Fernando when you can drive across town, you’re in Los Angeles and there’s no rules,” said Raul Godinez, a member of the 15-member residents council.
Godinez proposed that the city establish a specific plan for northeast Valley communities that can mandate per-capita controls, such as no more than one liquor license per 1,000 residents. The use of such a ratio to guide the granting of liquor permits is a key element of San Fernando’s ordinance, which went into effect in May.
