Los Angeles County firefighters in Palmdale--where fireworks are legal--were kept busy on the Fourth of July holiday responding to 45 small fires early Monday morning, most believed to have been started by fireworks, they said.

Fire Capt. Jerry Greenelsh of Fire Station 37 in downtown Palmdale said that of the 45 calls, 30 were grass fires, about a dozen of which were ignited by fireworks. He said the others are also believed to have been started by fireworks, but the exact causes were still under investigation.

Greenelsh said there were no major injuries nor serious damage in any of the fires, which all occurred between midnight and 8 a.m. Monday.
