SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

After the arrest of financial director C. Gordon Vessey on suspicion of selling methamphetamines, city officials on Tuesday reassigned his duties and deleted his name from key financial documents.

Although officials say the city’s finances are in order, City Manager Arthur C. Simonian gave Vessey’s duties to Assistant City Manager David Gurchow.

“Appropriate duties have been assigned to Gurchow, who is now acting financial director,” Simonian reported Tuesday at a City Council meeting.

The council was expected to hold a closed session late Tuesday after the meeting to discuss Vessey’s status.

Vessey, 43, was arrested last week in Buena Park on suspicion of selling 2 ounces of methamphetamines to an undercover police officer. He posted $50,000 bail and was released Saturday.

Vessey has been a Yorba Linda employee for more than 20 years.

He is on probation for a misdemeanor drunk driving conviction in 1990, according to the state Department of Motor Vehicles. Also, his driver’s license was suspended in February after he failed to maintain proper insurance coverage, according to DMV records.
