STAGE NOTES : Hispanic Festival, Barclay Series Set

Monologuist Spalding Gray will perform “Gray’s Anatomy,” which revolves around his recent traumatic eye operation that ultimately led to his marriage, on May 1 as one of three offerings in the 1993-94 Theater Series at the Irvine Barclay Theatre. The theater also has scheduled the California Shakespeare Festival’s “Hamlet,” starring Robert Sicular in the title role, for Oct. 20 and El Teatro Campesino, the Latino troupe founded by Luis Valdez, on Feb. 20. HISPANIC PLAY FEST: South Coast Repertory’s eighth annual Hispanic Play Festival in Costa Mesa will feature “barrio philosopher” Ruben Sierra in his one-man show “I Am Celso,” the company has announced.

The festival, to run from July 24 through Aug. 7, will begin with “Una Noche del Teatro,” a music and comedy revue to raise funds for SCR’s neighborhood outreach program and its work with Hispanic playwrights.

The benefit evening (July 24) will feature actresses Elizabeth Pena and Julie Carmen as hosts; celebrity chairman Ricardo Montalban; the folk group La Tres; comedians Cris Franco and Cha Cha Sandoval; the music of Tito and Tarantula, and Sierra in an excerpt from his show.

Sierra’s “I Am Celso” will play July 31 and Aug. 1, followed by three public readings of new plays in progress on Aug. 6 and 7.
