LOS ANGELES : Attorney Admits Role in Phony Car Accident Ring

A Los Angeles attorney who pleaded guilty Tuesday to charges stemming from a ring that bilked auto insurers out of more than $10 million faces up to five years in state prison.

Warren Finn, 55, entered his pleas in Los Angeles Superior Court to single counts of insurance fraud and money laundering and six counts of state income tax evasion.

The charges stemmed from a widespread “capping” operation run out of his Wilshire Boulevard law firm, which included about 1,000 staged accidents and inflated claims over a two-year period. Capping involves recruiting people to participate in a staged accident.

Finn also agreed to turn over $1 million in property to settle a separate, unfair business practices lawsuit filed by the district attorney’s Major Fraud Division, said Deputy Dist. Atty. Richard Rosenthal. Under the plea agreement, Superior Court Judge George Trammell will sentence Finn to five years in prison on Aug. 24.
