Two young brothers were recovering from gunshot wounds Wednesday after getting caught in a gun battle between two gangs in the troubled Jeffrey-Lynne neighborhood near Disneyland.

The boys, ages 4 and 7, were playing in front of their apartment in the 1200 block of West Lynne Avenue when the shooting began about 7:20 p.m. Tuesday, Anaheim Police Lt. Vince Howard said.

“Shots were ringing out and the two little boys had taken shelter between two cars that were parked in the street, but they got hit anyway,” Howard said.

The older boy suffered a broken leg in the shooting; he remained at UC Irvine Medical Center in Orange on Wednesday. His younger brother was hit in the hand and was treated at the same hospital and released.

Police arrested three reputed gang members from Garden Grove in connection with the shooting about five hours after the incident.

Two are 17-year-olds who are being held at Orange County Juvenile Hall. The third, Marcus Kuryliw, 18, is being held on $250,000 bail at Orange County Jail on suspicion of attempted murder.

About reputed 10 gang members were standing in the street when the Garden Grove suspects drove up and reportedly flashed gang signs at the group, police said.

“The group on foot started in the direction of the car . . . and started shooting at them,” Howard said. “As the car was leaving, shots continued to ring out, and that’s when the boys were hit.”
