CARLSBAD — Four passengers riding in the bed of a pickup truck were thrown through the center-divider bushes of Interstate 5 into the opposing southbound lanes of traffic near Carlsbad Wednesday morning, killing one and injuring the others, a California Highway Patrol spokesman said.
The driver and two passengers riding in the front seat of the pickup suffered minor injuries, spokesman Ted Prola said, although three riding in the back suffered major injuries, including one passenger’s broken neck.
The truck overturned, Prola said, when the tread on the right rear tire separated, causing the driver to lose control. A camper shell on the rear of the pickup detached, leaving the four passengers riding in the back unprotected.
The one who died--whose name had not been released late Wednesday, pending notification of next of kin--was decapitated when he struck an oncoming car, Prola said.
The others thrown from the rear were flown to area hospitals.
