WGA West Turns Down AFL-CIO Affiliation: The Writers Guild of America’s West Coast members rejected the affiliation with the Department for Professional Employees of the AFL-CIO. Those for affiliation--including a majority of the guild’s board members--argued it would have given the guild added clout with Clinton Administration labor officials. Those against objected to the cost of affiliating and said the move would threaten the guild’s image as a unique organization. East Coast members affiliated in 1989.
