PORT HUENEME : Fees for Sewage, Trash, Tennis Hiked

Share

Port Hueneme residents will be paying more for their monthly trash and sewage service and for their annual tennis memberships at Moranda Park after the City Council approved three rate increases.

Monthly fees for trash collection will rise $2.05, to $14.80 for one container, and monthly residential sewage rates will climb $3, to $13 per residence. The increases will go into effect Aug. 1.

Family tennis memberships at Moranda Park will increase $15, to $165, and individual rates will go up $10, to $95.

The City Council approved all three increases by 5-0 votes Wednesday.

Public Works Director Jack Duffy said the sewage rate hike, the first since 1983, will generate $325,000 annually, helping to compensate for a large increase in the cost of treating sewage at Oxnard’s plant.

Duffy said the monthly cost has more than doubled from July, 1991, to April, 1992, to $170,689, primarily because of an increase in the amount in sewage. He said that jump “is the main reason for the increase.”

Duffy said the city has more than $800,000 in its sewage reserve fund but that the fund should be left intact because of the condition of many of the city’s aging sewer lines, some of which date back to 1943.

Duffy said the trash fee increase will raise about $96,000 annually.
