De La Hoya Withdraws From Fight After Injuring Hand in Training
Oscar De La Hoya injured his left hand Wednesday in a training session and Thursday withdrew from his pay-per-view lightweight fight with Narciso Valenzuela on July 17 at Las Vegas.
Promoter Bob Arum replaced the De La Hoya-Valenzuela fight with one matching Sylmar lightweight Rafael Ruelas against veteran Darryl Tyson.
Humberto Gonzalez, the former Mexico City light-flyweight champion who was knocked out by Michael Carbajal last March 13, came down with chickenpox and also withdrew. He was to have fought South Korean Kim Bong-Jun. Melchor Cob Castro will replace Gonzalez.
The two main events on the Caesars Palace card, world light-flyweight champion Carbajal vs. South Korean Kim Kwang-Sun and Jorge Paez vs. Freddie Pendleton for Pendleton’s International Boxing Federation lightweight title, remain intact.
