The University of La Verne’s vice president of administration and finance died suddenly last week, school President Stephen Morgan said.

John G. (Skip) Mainiero, a 1962 graduate of the university, had been a full-time faculty member since 1972.

University officials said Mainiero, 53, died Friday morning from an aortic aneurysm, a weakening or enlargement of the body’s main artery.

Mainiero, who earned a doctorate of education at the University of Northern Colorado, assumed the post of education department chairman shortly after joining the faculty and held the position until 1987.

In 1987, he was appointed vice president and developed the university’s five-year financial master plan. Officials say that under his leadership the school’s financial picture improved dramatically.

“The entire community and particularly the university have lost one of the most superb teachers and administrators we have ever known,” Morgan said.

Benjamin C. Harris, chairman of the university’s board of directors, said Mainiero embodied the tradition and values of the university and that his presence would be deeply missed.

Mainiero is survived by his wife of 31 years, Nancy, and two sons.
