GLENDALE : Fire Supervisor Will Be Honored
A Glendale Fire Department supervisor will be honored Tuesday for educating employees from 80 local businesses over the past year about hazardous waste and safety regulations.
Vasken Demirjian, who oversees the department’s Environmental Management Center, is expected to receive a plaque from Glendale Community College during a Glendale City Council meeting, officials said.
City officials said Thursday that Demirjian and his division deserve the recognition.
“Vasken is being honored for his outstanding leadership working with (employees from) 80 companies,” said Lee Downing, an administrative analyst for the city.
The college’s professional development center, the Verdugo Private Industry Council and the Fire Department have been sponsoring free sessions--titled “Hazardous Materials and Safety in the Workplace Training”--for businesses since September.
Demirjian teaches the three-hour evening sessions, held once a week for 14 weeks.
More than 100 students have completed the course and have been able to apply their knowledge on environmental safety regulations and waste storage and disposal at their workplace, Demirjian said. They work for companies ranging from print shops to hospitals.
“I think it (the program) is a good idea,” Demirjian said. “We need to put the word out” about hazardous materials and new environmental regulations.
