San Marino : School Chief Resigns
Supt. Gary G. Richards is leaving the school district to become superintendent of a Connecticut school system.
Richards, who has been superintendent in San Marino since 1987, made the announcement last week. His last day will be Friday. He is scheduled to start with the New Canaan Public Schools on Aug. 16.
The 45-year-old educator rose through the ranks over 13 years. He began as an assistant principal of instruction at San Marino High School, then served as principal for four years until being named assistant superintendent in 1986. He was promoted to superintendent the next year.
Richards said the job offers new challenges and a chance for his family to experience another part of the country.
Richards is a graduate of Colgate University in New York state. He grew up in New York’s Westchester County, just across the border from New Canaan.
“He will be missed and it’s certainly with regret that I accepted his resignation,” said Nancy Bartlett, Board of Education president.
At Tuesday’s school board meeting, members initiated a search for Richards’ successor. The district will consider current staff and candidates from outside the district.
