Puente Hills Landfill
I was very disappointed to learn that Los Angeles County supervisors approved expanding Puente Hills Landfill without approving measures which would lead to alternatives to dumping trash (July 7). This seems very shortsighted. I believe we should raise the cost of dumping and use the fees generated to promote trash reduction and recycling programs. We still do not have a green waste disposal program in my city; over one-third of the trash from our home is plant material, which could be recycled back to nature. Giant landfills of trash pollute underground sources of drinking water and will never disintegrate enough to use for anything else.
