LA PALMA : City Gets OK to Take Bids for Park Project

An extensive, six-month renovation project that will include construction of an amphitheater, gazebo and group picnic area could get underway at Central Park as soon as November, city officials say.

The Community Development Commission on Tuesday night authorized the city to open the bidding process for the project, which has been in the planning stages for two years. The city has budgeted $625,000 for the project.

The amphitheater will be made from steel and seat up to 300 people on concrete benches when completed. A five-foot arch will be built atop the facility. Plans also call for a concrete plaza area next to the amphitheater.

City officials hope schools and other local organizations will make use of the amphitheater, especially for staging plays and concerts.

“The park is already in pretty good shape,” said Ron Kenny, city director of recreation and community services. “The amphitheater and landscaping will provide the community with even more options.”

The project will also require the demolition of some play and picnic areas to make room for the new structures.

If funds are available, the city also plans to install 32 new parking spaces, new restrooms and a sand volleyball court at the park, which is at 7821 Walker St. Financing for the project comes from Community Development Commission funds, park fees charged to developers and urban park grants.
