Glenn B. Henderson has been elected board president of California Literacy Inc., a nonprofit, adult literacy network based in San Gabriel.

For 10 years, Henderson, a resident of Los Angeles, has been a tutor with the California Literacy program at the Glendale YMCA, working with many individuals to improve their basic skills in literacy and ESL (English as a Second Language). He was president of that program for four years.

Henderson has been on the California Literacy Board since August, 1990, and has a distinguished record of service in literacy issues.

Garfield Medical Center, based in Monterey Park, has named Mary Robinson director of volunteer services. She will oversee the volunteer program at Garfield Medical Center as well as develop the existing program and recruit volunteers.

Robinson, a resident of Northridge, was previously assistant director of volunteers at Valley Hospital Medical Center in Van Nuys. Before that, she worked at the American Heart Assn. Robinson has more than 15 years of volunteer management experience prior to coming to Garfield Medical Center.

Robinson is a member and past president of the Directors of Volunteers in Agencies/Los Angeles and a member of Southern California Assn. of Directors of Volunteer Services.

Linda Narvaez-Wissmann of Alhambra was recently honored by state Sen. Art Torres (D-Los Angeles) for her service as president of the Latino Medical Students Assn. Torres presented Narvaez-Wissmann with a plaque at her graduation from the USC School of Medicine.

Two San Gabriel Valley police officers have graduated from the FBI National Academy Program in Quantico, Va.

Capt. Bill Ankeny of the El Monte department and Capt. Andrew Harvey of Covina received 11 weeks of advanced investigative, management and fitness training.
