Road’s Scholars

This letter is in response to Irma Weiner’s July 11 letter regarding road conditions on the Alaska Highway through Canada.

I am a widow in my 70s and travel alone in my van. I drove the Alaska Highway from Dawson Creek, British Columbia, to Fairbanks the summer of 1990 and again in ’92. True, there were some areas of repair and construction that made travel miserable. However, we must take into consideration that this is wilderness country. Due to extremes in winter weather, repairs are possible only during the brief summer when tourist travel is heaviest. The few inconveniences are worth it, considering the reward of awesomely beautiful scenery.

Let’s not tell Canada to “clean up its act.” It is a privilege to travel through Canada to reach Alaska. Those who prefer four-lane highways should stay out of wilderness.

I would like to suggest that anyone planning to drive the Alaska Highway “study up,” before he/she leaves. I drove the highway a year ago and was delighted--but I knew what to expect, since the literature I read warned me.
