BASEBALL DAILY REPORT : AROUND THE MAJORS : Mussina Will Apologize to Gaston
Oriole pitcher Mike Mussina plans to apologize to Toronto Blue Jay Manager Cito Gaston for putting him in an awkward situation during the All-Star game in Baltimore.
Mussina began warming up in the bullpen on his own initiative during the late innings of the All-Star game on July 13. Fans started booing loudly when Gaston did not bring Mussina in for the final out of the American League’s 9-3 victory.
Gaston was criticized by the media, because no one realized Mussina had chosen to get up and throw on his own.
“I want to apologize,” Mussina said Sunday.
Mussina said he and Toronto pitcher Pat Hentgen were told before the game they would pitch only if the game went into extra innings.
