6.2 Quake Rocks Capital of Sudan; Five Killed

An earthquake shook Khartoum and central Sudan on Sunday, killing five people and injuring 22, authorities said.

The epicenter of the 6.2 magnitude temblor was recorded in Dongola, a town on the Nile River about 290 miles northwest of the capital, according to Egypt’s Helwan Observatory. Two minor aftershocks followed.

Two of the killed were street dwellers in Khartoum. The three others died in central Sudan, according to official Omdurman Radio, which said the quake lasted about 50 seconds.
