A 5-year-old boy and two adults were hospitalized Tuesday after a van jumped the curb and hit them, police said.

The 72-year-old driver told police she was going west in the 700 block of West First Street when another vehicle cut in front of her. Trying to avoid a collision, the woman swerved her van onto the sidewalk, where she struck the three pedestrians about 11:20 a.m., said Officer Todd O’Conner.

The youth was taken to UCI Medical Center in Orange with a skull fracture and a broken leg. Authorities declined to release the name of the boy, who was listed in critical condition, police said.

Jose Sanchez, 44, of Santa Ana suffered a pelvic fracture and was listed in serious condition. Alicia Jimenez, 40, of Garden Grove had a shoulder dislocated and was stable Tuesday night. Both were taken to Western Medical Center-Santa Ana.

Police had only a sketchy description of the vehicle that cut in front of the van, saying it was small and gray. They do not know the identity of the other driver, O’Conner said.

The accident is under investigation, and no charges have been filed, police said.
