COSTA MESA : Funds Freed for Housing Project
Escrow closed Wednesday on Costa Mesa Village, city officials said, making the $4.2-million, low-income housing project eligible to receive funding and ending a two-year struggle to provide the county’s first single-resident-occupancy hotel.
“That’s great,” said Councilman Joe Erickson. “And I would like to stress it’s not a flophouse.”
Funds for the project, first proposed in 1991 and given final approval by the City Council last March, will now be spent toward converting the Travelodge Motel at 2450 Newport Blvd. to affordable housing.
Fawn Franksen, spokeswoman for Butler-Ogden Associates, project developer, said the facility will contain 96 furnished rooms, each with bathroom, linen, television set, telephone and kitchenette. It is expected to be open by November.
Muriel Berman, the city’s redevelopment projects manager, said rent for each room will be about $456 a month. Rooms will be rented to screened applicants with no criminal records and with incomes of $11,000 to $18,450 a year.
