Costa Mesa Man Held in Drive-By Shootings

A 21-year-old Costa Mesa man was arrested early Saturday on suspicion of attempted murder in the drive-by shooting of two young men on Pomona Avenue.

Police said the attack was apparently gang-related. The two men wounded in the shooting are expected to recover.

The suspect’s vehicle was stopped about a mile from the scene, police said.

“Further investigation led to the arrest of Joseph Guzman Arellano,” said Sgt. Matt Collett. “Other suspects are outstanding.”

Arellano is being held in the City Jail in lieu of $250,000 bail.

Police said the shooting occurred about 2:15 a.m. when victims Javier Vargas, 20, and Miguel Hernandez, 18, were standing on the sidewalk in the 1900 block of Pomona Avenue.

A passenger in a passing vehicle fired shots at them, police said. Vargas was struck in the back, while Hernandez was hit in the leg. Both are in good condition in a hospital, but police did not release the name of the hospital for security reasons.
