OXNARD : City Accepts Grant to Fight Drug Abuse

Share

The Oxnard City Council voted Tuesday to accept $250,000 in federal funding for drug prevention programs in the city’s public housing projects.

Oxnard officials say they plan to use the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development funds to offer medical treatment, education and counseling services to prevent drug abuse in the city’s poorer neighborhoods.

“I think it’s a comprehensive approach to dealing with the abuse of drugs in public housing,” said Sal Gonzalez, Oxnard’s director of public housing.

“We’re quite happy with the grant because it is a problem that needs attention.”

Gonzalez said that in the past two years, 10 families have been evicted from public housing for use of illegal drugs.

The housing department will begin offering services in October from an office at the Multi-Service Center at 1500 Colonia Road.
