STUDIO CITY : Planners to Vote on Mini-Mall Request

The Los Angeles Planning Commission is scheduled to vote today on requests by the developer of a Studio City mini-mall for exceptions to local zoning ordinances.

The developer of Laurel Promenade mall, 12050 Ventura Blvd., has asked permission for more and larger signs than allowed under the Ventura Boulevard Specific Plan, which places limits on development along the 17-mile strip.

While a spokesman for the developer has said the exceptions are minor, members of a local residents association say they will oppose the requests.

“We don’t want the mall to pull down our community. We want it to fit in,” said Genny Incaudo, a board member of the Studio City Residents Assn., which was engaged in a months-long battle with the developer over traffic improvements connected to the mall.

Incaudo said that during the residents’ monthly meeting Tuesday, a vote was taken of the more than 100 in attendance regarding the appearance of the mall. “The general consensus was: ‘The mall is really ugly,’ ” Incaudo said, adding that the association will approach the developer about landscaping and other improvements.

Any decision reached by the Planning Commission could be appealed to the City Council.
