A teen-ager was critically injured and another youth was held on suspicion of attempted murder after an argument on a street corner erupted in gunfire, police said Friday.

The victim, a 17-year-old from Garden Grove, was shot in the stomach about 11:40 p.m. Thursday while riding his bicycle near the intersection of Yucca Avenue and Sage Street, police said. He was with Rudy Espinoza, 18, also of Garden Grove, who was on another bicycle.

The two youths rode through the intersection near a group of men and women with whom they began to argue, Sgt. Steve Hicks said. It was not clear what the argument was about.

One member of the group then began shooting at the two cyclists, and Espinoza fired back with a handgun he was carrying, police said. He did not hit anyone.

Espinoza was arrested at the scene on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon. The gunman who wounded the juvenile remained at large Friday, police said. He was described as being in his 20s and was wearing a blue jacket and shorts.
