Van Nuys-Sherman Oaks Blows Lead, Game

Van Nuys-Sherman Oaks blew a three-run lead in losing to Belmont (Calif.), 6-5, in the first round of the Babe Ruth baseball championships Saturday at Elk Grove High near Sacramento.

Van Nuys-Sherman Oaks scored two runs in the top of the sixth--on a squeeze bunt by Adrian Perez and a sacrifice fly by Chris Hebert--to take a 5-2 lead, but Belmont evened the score in its half of the inning on three hits and a passed ball.

Belmont scored the winning run in the seventh on a sacrifice fly after a walk, a fielder’s choice and an error put runners at first and third with one out.

Van Nuys-Sherman Oaks took a 3-2 lead in the fifth on Bill Scott’s two-run triple and Tom Salazar’s ensuing single.

Van Nuys-Sherman Oaks (7-2) will play Guam in an elimination game Monday at 2 p.m.
