A weekend federal sale of more than 90 wild horses and burros was called off after three of the animals died and others were found to be sick.

The animals instead will be trucked to Tennessee for quarantine “as soon as they improve more,” probably today, said Art DiGrazia, a supervisor for the Bureau of Land Management, which oversees the Adopt-A-Horse program.

Four animals were sick with scours, a diarrhea-like condition, and three horses that died Friday and Saturday had the same ailment, DiGrazia said Sunday.

After a two-week quarantine, healthy animals will be sold in Tennessee.
