BASEBALL / DAILY REPORT : AROUND THE MAJORS

Reuters

In what has been a second season of embarrassment for him, Anthony Young could be spared the indignity of a 20-loss season by another embarrassment: assignment to the minor leagues. Met Manager Dallas Green said demoting Young is an option at the club’s disposal, though he didn’t say whether the club was considering such a move.

One day after Young suffered his 15th defeat of the season and his 29th in his last 30 decisions over two seasons, Green said the 27-year-old pitcher must be held at least partially accountable for his losing. Green acknowledged the Mets’ poor play overall was a factor, but also noted Young’s tendency to “give up big hits in critical situations.”

Speaking before the Mets’ 6-2 victory against the Reds Monday night, Green said he might try to protect Young from losing 20 games.
