Investigation of Polanco Aide’s Beating Abandoned
University of California police have failed to solve a reported beating of a student intern for Assemblyman Richard Polanco (D-Los Angeles) and have disbanded a task force that spent 850 hours investigating it, Davis campus police said Friday.
“We’ve exhausted the leads, but I am going to leave this case open,” UC Davis Police Chief Calvin Handy said Friday, noting that few tips had come into the Police Department during the investigation. “We simply have to reallocate the resources.”
Irma Munoz, a UC Davis student who has advocated immigration rights on campus, reported that two men, one white and one Asian, attacked her as she walked home April 21 and demanded that she stop speaking out on the issue.
Munoz told police the men cut her hair, wrote racial slurs on her with a felt-tip pen and hit her. She also reported that she was attacked the next day in a stairwell of a campus building.
