World IN BRIEF : RUSSIA : Talks on Lithuania Pullout Broken Off

Russia said it has broken off talks on withdrawing its remaining troops from Lithuania. It warned the Lithuanian government that its response would be “swift and decisive” if the remaining Russians suffer any intimidation. The terse Russian Foreign Office statement marked the deepest gulf in relations between Russia and Lithuania since the end of Soviet rule in 1991. Lithuanian President Algirdas Brazauskas canceled talks in Moscow today with Russian President Boris N. Yeltsin.
