COLLEGE FOOTBALL DAILY REPORT : UCLA : Some Shuffling of Depth Chart

Share

The updated UCLA depth chart shows a bit of shuffling since the end of spring practice, with injuries and the exuberance of youth as contributing factors.

Defensively, George Kase has risen to No. 1 at nose guard, with Bruce Walker out for the season because of a university disciplinary action, and Sale Isaia slow to recover from a shoulder injury. Kase, at 245 pounds, is 55 pounds lighter than Isaia and 73 lighter than Walker.

Freshman Travis Kirschke, an All-American last season at Anaheim Esperanza High, has moved into the No. 2 spot and probably will find increased playing time as the season progresses.

Freshman Jeff Ruckman, recruited as a linebacker from Porterville (Calif.) High, has become the No. 2 fullback, largely because there are few bodies at that position. Donahue is impressed with Ruckman’s willingness to mix it up. “He hits good, but he just doesn’t know who to hit yet,” Donahue said. “He hits anything that moves. Our guys, their guys--he hits them all.”

Freshman Andy Colbert, from Pasadena Muir, has moved up to No. 3 at left cornerback, where Teddy Lawrence has supplanted Bobby Gamble as the starter.

Bryan Adams, a junior who sat out last season because of an ankle injury, is listed as the starting flanker.

Jamir Miller is listed as the third-string outside linebacker in deference to his late start and the university disciplinary requirement that he sit out the opening game, against California.

Miller was back at practice Tuesday for the first time since last Thursday. He has had flu.
