Long Beach : Hearing to Seek Solution on Crossing Guard Safety
The City Council, saying that something must be done to keep crossing guards safe, voted unanimously Tuesday to ask the Public Safety Committee to hold an immediate hearing to find a solution.
The council vote comes in the wake of the recent murder of a school crossing guard who was shot to death as she waited for the school day to begin.
At Tuesday’s meeting, Police Chief William C. Ellis submitted a report analyzing three ways to allow crossing guards to call police immediately: police radio, cellular phones and transmitting devices known as “panic alarms.” Ellis said the panic alarms are unreliable and police radios are too expensive, but he made no recommendation.
