VENTURA : School Board Votes to Oppose Vouchers
The Ventura Unified School District Board of Education has unanimously voiced its opposition to the proposed statewide voucher initiative.
The initiative “would have a detrimental effect” on public education, district Supt. Joseph Spirito told the board at its regular bimonthly meeting Tuesday.
If passed, the initiative--Proposition 174--would give parents a yearly voucher of $2,600 for each child.
The money would be used to pay for tuition at the school of their choice, public or private.
The largely symbolic vote by the Board of Education was opposed at the meeting by Robert Chatenever, an Oxnard College instructor, who said it was “inappropriate for public agencies to try to influence elections.”
But board President John Walker said the state’s education code “gives a school board the right to pass a resolution.”
