College Gets $100,000 Toward Writing Lab

An educational foundation has donated $100,000 for Los Angeles Valley College to create a first-of-its kind English writing lab on campus, college officials announced Tuesday.

The lab, which will open in the Humanities Building this spring, will serve about 5,000 students per semester and utilize 15 computer stations, said Shannon Stack, public relations specialist for the college.

It will be the first tutorial lab solely dedicated to writing English, said Stack. Currently, the college has a combination math/English lab. The lab will be supervised by Steve Whitney, who now oversees the math/English lab.

The college’s foundation, the Patrons’ Assn. of Los Angeles Valley College, received the grant a few weeks ago from the nonprofit Alliance For The Advancement of Education.
