Seles Hasn’t Swung a Racket, Much Less Planned a Comeback

Monica Seles has not swung a racket since she was stabbed by a fan nearly four months ago, the former No. 1-ranked tennis player said in a taped interview to be shown tonight on ABC’s “Primetime Live.”

”. . .As soon (as) I’ll be able to physically swing a racket and hit a ball, I’m going to go out there and swing it,” Seles said.

“I haven’t hit a ball for a long time and . . . and I . . . and I mean for me to get back to any level is going to take a lot of hours . . .”

The interview is the first by Seles since a news conference at a clinic in Vail, Colo., shortly after the April 30 incident during a match at Hamburg, Germany, when an unemployed lathe operator sank a paring knife into Seles’ back as she sat in her chair on the court during a changeover.

“It did happen,” Seles said. “It’s not a bad dream and I have to wake up.”
