COLLEGE FOOTBALL / DAILY REPORT : UCLA : Donahue Makes Stand at Workout

Share

Practice had barely begun Friday when it was halted and the clock reset by an angry man with an awareness of the calendar.

“We weren’t getting ready to practice,” UCLA Coach Terry Donahue said. “We were out here, still thinking it was brunch time, so I just wanted to start it over to set the tempo that if we weren’t going to work, we’d be out here forever.”

First on an agenda that began and ended with mention of California, the Bruins’ opening-night opponent Sept. 4, was kicking, and Jason Lesley, a high school kicker last season, made five of six from 46 yards. Bjorn Merten, a redshirt last season, made four of six from the same distance.

Competition for the extra-point and field-goal job has come down to those two, with Merten kicking off.

Practice wound on, with increasing emphasis on preparing for Cal.

“We need to get cranking up, get out of the two-a-day mode,” Donahue said. “Time’s going a lot faster and we need to pick it up. Cal’s not very far down the road. We only have tomorrow (today), and Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday to get ready, with Thursday and Friday to rest. Four practices to go, we’d better get cranked up.”

Quarterback Wayne Cook continues to wear the red jersey of the injured, with a thigh muscle problem. So, too, does left tackle Jonathan Ogden, who has a hip problem suffered in Wednesday’s scrimmage. Both are expected to be ready for Monday workouts.
