Todd Kinchen walked without a limp. Jeff Chadwick loosened up his right hamstring. Sean LaChapelle snagged passes with a taped left hand.

This was no time to take a day off, not for Ram wide receivers Friday.

The Rams, unsatisfied with their depth at wide receiver, brought in Sam Graddy, Tony Hargain and Ernie Jones to shore up the position.

Now comes the hard part. Whom do they keep?

That might become clear after tonight, when the Rams play the Raiders at Anaheim Stadium at 6. It’s the last exhibition for both teams; Monday, they must trim their rosters to 47.

Only veteran receivers Henry Ellard and Willie Anderson seem ensured spots on the Ram roster. There are seven other receivers trying to catch on.

“We’re going to have to really evaluate that situation,” Coach Chuck Knox said. “We have to look at it very, very closely.”

Is there enough time for analysis?

“We’re going to have to take a calculated guess,” Knox said.

Knox already has a good idea about Jones, who was acquired from the Phoenix Cardinals on Thursday. He caught 38 passes last season and led the Cardinals with 61 receptions in 1991. The Rams have scored only four touchdowns in three exhibitions.

“Take a look at how many balls he’s caught for touchdowns and the big plays he made,” Knox said.

Jones has caught 210 in his career, 18 for touchdowns. He was also arrested for drug possession in February. Charges were dropped after he began a drug-diversion program.

With Jones, the Rams seem to have three solid receivers, provided Ellard’s sprained ankle heals soon. He is listed as questionable for tonight.

The rest of the spots are up for grabs.

“I feel a little better because we have some healthy bodies,” Knox said. “I hope to feel real good because some of these guys jump up there and do something.”

Of course, not everyone may be overjoyed to see new faces in the crowd. Free agent Richard Buchanan has been with the Rams all summer and will probably start tonight if Ellard can’t play.

“My philosophy is that I’ve done everything I can to make this team,” Buchanan said. “I don’t feel they are any threat to me.”

The Raiders will also be taking a long look at their wide receivers. Veterans James Lofton and Willie Gault appear to be battling for the final spot at that position.

Lofton, a 16-year player, is the NFL’s career leader in receiving yardage. Gault, an 11-year veteran, has averaged 20 yards per catch during his career.

The Raiders, as have the Rams, have had problems scoring. In fact, the Raiders’ only offensive touchdown in the last three games was scored by running back Greg Robinson, an eighth-round draft pick who is not expected to make the 47-man roster.

Raider quarterback Jeff Hostetler, who has a three-year deal worth $7.5 million, has thrown three interceptions. Newcomer Gaston Green is averaging 2.4 yards per carry.
